Lisa Campo-Engelstein, PhD appointed Director of the Institute for the Medical Humanities

Lisa Campo-Engelstein, PhD is now the Director for the Institute for the Medical Humanities. Prior to joining UTMB, she was Associate Director of the Alden March Bioethics Institute with a secondary appointment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Albany Medical College. Dr. Campo-Engelstein earned a PhD from Michigan State University in philosophy with a focus on bioethics and feminist theory. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the Oncofertility Consortium at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Dr. Campo-Engelstein specializes in reproductive ethics, especially fertility preservation and male contraception, and feminist and queer bioethics. In 2019 the BBC recognized her research as engendering a better future for women, naming her as one of the 100 “inspiring and influential” Women of 2019.   With this appointment, she holds the Harris L. Kempner Chair in the Humanities in Medicine and will have an appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health.
