On January 31, 2023 BHH Assistant Professor Dr. Stephen Molldrem published a Correspondence in Clinical Infectious Diseases titled “Research on the Development of SARS-CoV-2 Variants of Concern in People with Advanced HIV Disease Should Highlight Structural Conditions and Avoid Harmful Stereotypes.”  The short piece addresses a growing area of research within infectious disease genomic epidemiology that is focused on identifying the potential development of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern in people living with advanced HIV disease or AIDS. Molldrem argues that genomic epidemiologists working in this area should not only focus on the biomedical aspects of cases/findings, but should also “address the underlying material conditions that lead some people with HIV – a treatable condition – to unnecessarily develop AIDS.” The contribution is part of Dr. Molldrem’s ongoing research on the ethics and practice of genomic epidemiology during the global scale-up of pathogen genetic sequencing infrastructures.
