On April 6, 2023, UTMB Bioethics and Health Humanities Assistant Professor Dr. Stephen Molldrem gave virtual Ethics Grand Rounds at the Alden March Bioethics Institute at Albany Medical College. His presentation was titled “Troubling Infrastructural Integrations: Exploring the Roots of Controversies Over Molecular HIV Surveillance in the United States.” The talk drew on Dr. Molldrem’s ethnographic research, policy engagements, and data from a qualitative interview study to draw attention to the long history of controversies over uses of HIV public health data in the country. His remarks focused on how this historical perspective can inform ethical considerations related to these programs, which involve integrating data infrastructures from the different domains of HIV care, surveillance, prevention, and research. Dr. Molldrem has previously published about these programs in The American Journal of Bioethics and Critical Public Health.
