On April 27th UTMB Bioethics and Health Humanities Assistant Professor Dr. Stephen Molldrem gave a virtual talk to the Ethics and Real-World Evidence Research Project within the Working Group on Compassionate Use and Preapproval Access at the NYU Langone Division of Medical Ethics. The presentation was titled “‘Real-time’ outcomes and ‘real-world’ evidence: Implications for a materialist data ethics.” The talk drew on his fieldwork and policy research in digital health, translational science, and pathogen genomics to argue for new forms of data ethics that prioritize accounting for time, labor, and exploitation in the construction and use of data infrastructures. This work is part of an ongoing project of Dr. Molldrem’s that utilizes the method of historical materialism and other varieties of Marxist theory to make interventions at the intersection of data ethics, bioethics, and public health ethics.
