A
retired board-certified chaplain, Dr. Peggy Determeyer received her PhD
in the Medical Humanities with a concentration in Health Care Ethics
and Policy from the Institute for the Medical Humanities at the
University of Texas Medical Branch – Galveston. As the Director of the
Community Bioethics and Aging Center and McGee Fellow at the Hope and
Healing Center and Institute (HHCI), Dr. Determeyer develops and offers
programs and training for health care professionals, pastors, and others
to provide humane, compassionate care for those who are ill and/or
aging as well as offer support for family members. Dr. Determeyer is
also serving as the chair for the ethics consultation service for
community members facing health care planning issues and is an Adjunct
Instructor at UTMB Galveston. Her research interests include
end-of-life planning, nurse
empowerment, and physician-patient communications. She is a member of
the American Society for Bioethics and the Humanities, the Health
Humanities Consortium, the Houston Gerontological Society, and is an
associate member of the UT Health Consortium on Aging. In addition to
the PhD, Dr. Determeyer holds an MBA from the Wharton School (University
of Pennsylvania); MDiv from Perkins School of Theology (Southern
Methodist University); and is a Board Certified Chaplain through the Association of Professional Chaplains.
