UTMB Student Is Tops at AMA Research Symposium

 

The American Medical Association selected UTMB SOM student Vlad Codrea for a top award recognizing research from medicine’s brightest young minds. Codrea was awarded the overall winner among medical students for his presentation examining the use of an amplification method to detect and visualize gene variants during the 12th annual AMA Research Symposium. The symposium, which took place as part of the AMA Interim Meeting in Dallas, Texas, included presentations from more than 400 of the country’s brightest medical students, residents, fellows and international medical graduates.


Karnath honored with 2014 Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) awarded Dr. Bernard Karnath, professor in UTMB’s Department of Internal Medicine, with the 2014 Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award. Named for longtime Alpha Omega Alpha Executive Director Dr. Robert Glaser, the award recognizes gifted teachers who have made significant contributions to medical student education. Inaugurated as a William Osler Scholar in the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine in 2008, Karnath is a devotee of Sir William Osler and a strong advocate of patient-centered teaching. A celebrated educator and mentor, Karnath has been honored with a Golden Apple Award nine times by School of Medicine students. Six graduating classes have presented him with the James W. Powers Memorial Award, which honors a clinical services teacher who best exemplifies the art of medicine.


School of Nursing Ranks No. 1 in Online Programs

 

Out of 25 institutions, UTMB’s School of Nursing earned the top spot in the Fall 2014 Online Nursing Grad Rankings on GraduatePrograms.com. Program rankings encompass reviews posted by more than 70,000 students participating in over 1,600 graduate programs nationwide. Ratings are based on a 10-star system and encompass 15 categories, including academic competitiveness, career support, financial aid and quality of network.

 

 


Clardy honored for lifetime achievement

 

Betsy Clardy, vice president and Chief Development Officer, was recently honored with the Byron Welch Award for Lifetime Achievement at the 2014 National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon. The event was hosted by the Board of Directors of The Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Houston Chapter.

The award recipient will be selected by a selection committee and will be formerly recognized at the annual MLK Community Service Award Ceremony and Luncheon. The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015. All active full- and part-time UTMB faculty, staff and students may be nominated. Nominations may recognize individuals who have:

 ·        A record of community service for a local community organization or the UTMB community

·        Demonstrated the virtues and skills of civic engagement and social responsibility

·        Acted as a champion for cultural diversity, inclusion and community partnership

·        Inspired change, which had a positive impact on others
