Celebrate International Open Access Week

Get ready to explore the world of open access during International Open Access Week, October 19-23. This annual event is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the benefits of open access, how to share your research widely, and how to contribute to a more equitable scholarly communication system.

The Moody Medical Library is excited to support Open Access Week with these activities:

  • Meet the Librarians: Have questions about open access, publishing, or navigating scholarly communication? Our expert librarians will be available on the second floor of the Library between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. all week. Stop by to discuss read and publish agreements, strategies to avoid predatory journals, and other important issues surrounding academic publishing.

  • Class: I’ve Written It, Now Where Do I Publish It: Join us for a practical session designed to guide you through the publishing process. You'll learn valuable tips for identifying suitable journals, discover publishers with whom the Library has agreements for article processing charges (APCs), and gain insights into avoiding predatory publishers. This class will be offered via Teams, allowing you to participate from any location.

                   Date: Thursday, October 22
                   Time: Noon – 1 p.m.
Registration: Please register to receive the Teams link and join us!

UTMB Authors Publish With OA Models

In the past year, our researchers have contributed to the open scholarly landscape. The Scopus database tracks publications by institution. In calendar year 2025, 66% of the Scopus citations attributed to UTMB were published with some type of OA designation.

Green OA is often used to comply with funding mandates to make publicly funded research openly available. This results in articles being posted to repositories, like PubMed Central.  Gold OA publishes articles openly on the journal website. The authors pay article processing charges, and the entire journal is free for readers. Hybrid Gold OA means that authors pay to have their article openly available in an otherwise subscription-based journal. Finally, Bronze OA means that the publisher has made the article openly available, but the reusage/ownership rights are unclear or are still retained by the publisher.

Open Access Week is a chance for all of us to reflect on how we can make research more accessible and impactful. We encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities to learn, engage, and contribute to a more open and equitable future for scholarly communication.
