Experiencing an unexplained decline in functional capacity can be confusing. Feeling out of breath on a short walk, for example, may have you wondering, “Is this just aging, or is there something more serious happening?”
A recent case at UTMB Health provided answers, and treatment, for a patient experiencing a gradual decline in his quality of life. Using an FDA-cleared AI platform capable of identifying coronary artery calcification on standard CT scans, clinicians detected severe multivessel coronary artery disease long before the patient experienced permanent heart damage or a major cardiac event.
This early discovery led to a comprehensive evaluation, including the uncovering of cardiac symptoms, a dedicated coronary CT scan, nuclear stress testing, and ultimately invasive coronary angiography. The findings confirmed significant disease requiring surgical revascularization, which successfully restored healthy blood flow to the heart. With timely intervention, the patient made an excellent recovery, completed cardiac rehabilitation, and now enjoys an improved quality of life and longterm outlook—demonstrating UTMB Health’s commitment to innovation, prevention, and exceptional patient care.
