If you don’t get health insurance through an employer, Medicare, or Medicaid, November marks the arrival of a crucial window: the annual Health Insurance Exchange open enrollment period. This is the designated timeframe when individuals can shop for, enroll in, or switch marketplace health insurance plans for the coming year.
At UTMB Health, we care for roughly 12,000 patients who rely on the Marketplace—so we know firsthand how high the stakes are. To help you lock in the right coverage without any unpleasant surprises, here are some things to keep in mind.
1. Mark your calendar: dates matter
The open enrollment window runs from Nov. 1 through Jan. 15. When you sign up impacts when your coverage starts:
- Sign up by Dec. 15: Plan selections or changes become effective Jan. 1.
- Sign up Dec. 16 through Jan. 15: Selections become effective Feb. 1.
Remember, timing is key: Outside of a qualifying life event (like moving, a divorce, or losing other coverage), enrollment is limited to this annual window.
2. Double-check that your providers are in-network
While monthly premiums are a big part of the equation, looking past the price tag is key. Just because a health system is in your area doesn’t automatically mean every marketplace plan includes your preferred doctors or specialists. As UTMB Health Insurance Specialist Brittany Grimaldi advises, taking a quick moment to verify your network ensures you can actually use the plan you choose. “We’ve seen folks just pick a plan, then go to their doctor and learn they don’t take it,” she notes. Fortunately, a little due diligence upfront makes this completely avoidable.
Head straight to the source: Grimaldi suggests using HealthCare.gov to shop, then checking the insurance carrier’s online provider directory to confirm your specific doctor and clinic are in-network.
3. Estimate your income accurately
Marketplace premiums are based on your projected annual household income, which determines your tax credits and subsidies. Be sure to project your income as accurately as possible to protect your household budget from unexpected tax-season surprises if your earnings change.
Stay up to date: Promptly updating your income in your marketplace account ensures your financial assistance stays accurate all year long.
