My
research is focusing on understanding the molecular mechanisms of
pathogenesis of emerging arboviruses. In particular, we are
investigating how arboviruses evade host innate immunity to establish
infection. Through these studies, we have identified a novel viral
immune evasion mechanism involving the sequestration of multiple
components of the RIG-I signaling pathways into bunyavirus-induced
cytoplasmic structures.
The
other major focus of my research is the investigation of host immune
responses to arbovirus infection. We have investigated the natural
immune responses to alphavirus infection and defined signatures of
protection and disease severity.
The
ultimate goal of our studies is to facilitate the rational development
of vaccines and antivirals against emerging arboviruses.
