Roberto
Garofalo, MD, is a professor in the Division of
Immunology/Allergy/Rheumatology, Department of Pediatrics at UTMB. Dr.
Garofalo is also a faculty member of the Graduate School Program in
Microbiology & Immunology and serves as Established Investigator for
the NIHCD-funded Child Health Research Center in Developmental
Immunobiology and for the NIEHS Center in Environmental Toxicology at
UTMB. Dr. Garofalo's research interest is the ontogeny, function, and
regulation of the mucosal immune system. Specifically, areas of his
investigations include pathogenesis of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
infection; experimental therapy and vaccine development for RSV; role
of viral infections in allergic sensitization and asthma development;
transcriptional regulation of inflammatory genes in the airway mucosa;
molecular and functional characterization of immunomodulatory substances
in human milk and interaction of these with the infant mucosal system.
Dr. Garofalo's laboratory is currently funded by federal grants and
other extramural and UTMB grants. Dr. Garofalo is also the Project
Leader and Director of the Tissue Culture and Immunoassay Core of the
Asthma and Allergic Disease Research Center at UTMB, funded by NIH. Dr.
Garofalo is a member of the American Association of Immunologists,
Society for Pediatric Research, Society of Mucosal Immunology, European
Society for Pediatric Infectious Disease, European Society for Pediatric
Hematology and Immunology, and the International Society for Research
in Human Milk and Lactation.
