Dr. Weaver is a tenured professor and Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Director of the Institute for Human Infections and Immunity, and Scientific Director for the Galveston National Laboratory. Dr. Weaver's research focuses on alphavirus vaccine development (for which he holds 9 patents), arboviral pathogenesis, genetics, ecology and evolution, and mechanisms of virus transmission by mosquitoes. His contributions include elucidating the ecology, evolution and mechanisms of emergence for Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE), chikungunya (CHIK), Dengue virus, Zika virus, and developing new vaccines for VEE, CHIK (patented), eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), and western equine encephalitis (WEE). Further, his research has included field studies of arboviruses in Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Panama, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Kenya and Senegal that have determined key ecological factors in maintenance and emergence of VEE, CHIK, Dengue and Zika viruses. Dr. Weaver has also worked on the development of new diagnostic antigen approaches and serologic assays for alphaviruses including two jointly developed and commercially available CHIK ELISAs.
