At the Center for Addiction Research’s Awards Ceremony on September
8, 2022, Dr. Heidi Spratt was presented with the Herin Champion of Big
Data Award as part of the the David V. Herin, Jr., PhD Addiction
Pioneer Endowment. The Herin Addiction Pioneer Award recognizes faculty
who conduct innovative substance use disorders research that adheres to
the same high standards of investigation that Dr. Herin demonstrated as
he worked to solve the puzzles of substance use disorders. Dr. Herin was
one of UTMB’s own, a graduate of the doctoral program in addiction
research. Dr. Herin had a stellar career that featured significant
contributions to our understanding of the psychobiology of addiction.
Dr. Spratt was presented this endowed award as a result of her continued
work mentoring graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior
faculty in the realm of machine learning, especially focused on problems
pertaining to substance use disorders.
