The Texas AHEC East - Victoria Region is located at the Victoria College campus and is committed to making our communities healthier. Victoria is the largest of many small rural towns in the Golden Crescent area (seven counties) and serves as a medical, educational and commercial hub to over 250,000 people. Located between Houston and Corpus Christi, Victoria is one of the oldest cities in Texas, founded by Martin de Leon in 1824.

The Victoria Region has played a significant role in educating healthcare professionals in our region! Our physicians and medical community are dedicated and show great interest in training the next generation of healthcare professionals!

Community Based Rotations

For over 25 years, Victoria Region has successfully placed health profession students and medical students in rural and underserved sites where they can work one on one with rural providers to understand their challenges and the unique obstacles of rural medicine.  Students have the chance to experience small town life as they volunteer and participate in service learning opportunities in the communities they serve!

Community Events

We partner with community partners to provide education, resources, and health related information to the most needy in our region.

Student Housing

We assist health profession students to secure affordable, safe housing while rotating in our community.  Life-long relationships have started here and we are always looking for new and creative ways to recruit future healthcare professionals to our smaller towns!  Derek Christensen, UNT student doctor, AHEC Scholar, was invited to stay with a VC Faculty and her family while rotating in Victoria!

Academic Partnerships

DeTar Family Medicine Residency Program is an invaluable partner to Texas AHEC – Victoria Region.  They offer clinical rotations to our health profession and medical students to further enhance the student’s knowledge of rural and underserved populations.  IPE is also an integral part of medical student education at the clinic.  Students will team up with residents and other healthcare professionals while rotating at the clinic and during rounds.  Additionally, many students choose to house together so they can truly experience team learning, inside and outside of clinic hours!
