The University of Texas Kenneth I. Shine M.D. Academy of Health Sciences Education (Shine Academy)


The Shine academy is an honorific and service academy promoting faculty excellence in the University of Texas System (UTS) health science education. UT Shine Academy annual membership acceptance is based on a competitive and rigorous review process. Membership requires institutional endorsement before candidates can be advanced for consideration by the organization. The typical timeline for submission is late June through August.

Requirements

  • Complete a form with components such as teaching philosophy, accomplishments, and reflection
  • 5-page “NIH-equivalent CV” relevant to education, and
  • 3 Letters of Support (i.e., nominator, peer, and learner)

Nomination letter should be from a Chair, Dean, or Institutional leader and/or Shine member.

Criteria and Selection

Evidence of educational excellence in 1 or more domains:

  • Direct teaching
  • Curriculum development and instructional design or re-design
  • Assessment of learner performance
  • Mentoring and counseling
  • Educational administration and leadership
  • Educational scholarship and research

The selection criteria typically include:

  • Quantity, quality, breadth, and variety of educational contributions
  • Innovation of educational contributions as measured by outcomes
  • Regional, national, and international reputation as an educator
  • Length of time at the UTS health science center(s) with active involvement in educational efforts.

UTMB Review and Advancement Process

No more than 4 applications will be accepted from any UTS institution.

The UT Shine Membership Committee reviews and ranks to select a maximum number of new members that is equal to twice the number of UTS institutions with one or more component health science schools.

  • Discuss your intention to apply with your Chair and Supervisor
  • Similar to APT, demonstrating impact and outcomes are important indicators of educational excellence. Think quantity AND quality indicators.
  • Contact the Academy of Master Teachers (AMT) if you would like consultation services as several members are honorees.
  • Read instructions carefully to include necessary information (i.e., typically you cannot include an attached CV or an entire CV)
