
The University of Texas System Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education
The University of Texas System (UTS) Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education (the Shine Academy) was formed as both a ‘working’ service academy and an ‘honorific’ body that recognizes and utilizes faculty excellence in UTS health science education to serve UTS in all aspects of health science education, educational scholarship, and leadership. The Academy seeks diverse membership representing the many disciplines contributing to health science education.
The annual application process for election to the University of Texas Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education is now open. Accomplished educators in all five UTMB schools are encouraged to apply.
Membership Criteria:
Membership in the Academy is based on the Shine Academy's mission as stated in the Bylaws. The annual nomination, application, election, and induction of new members will proceed as follows. The criteria for membership in the Academy are based on excellence in one or more of the following categories of education:
- Direct teaching.
- Curriculum development and instructional design or re-design.
- Assessment of learner performance.
- Mentoring and counseling.
- Educational administration and leadership.
- Educational scholarship and research.
Every application for membership submitted by an officially nominated candidate will include:
- Completed candidate for membership form
- A 5-page NIH-equivalent Curriculum Vitae (Do NOT submit a full CV. Only include service or research accomplishments when relevant to education, and explain relevance)
- Three (3) letters of support, as follows:
- One (1) official letter of nomination (include examples of the candidate’s educational expertise)
- One (1) peer letter of support (include details about the candidate’s educational expertise. Can be from faculty at the home or other institutions)
- One (1) learner letter of support (explain how the learner benefited from the educational expertise of the candidate)
Submissions should be directed to the Office of Faculty Affairs at facultyaffairs@utmb.edu with the subject line “Shine Academy.” The internal deadline for submitting applications and supporting materials is July 23, 2025, at 5 p.m.
Once applications are received, they will be reviewed and selected packets will be forwarded to The University of Texas System, Office of Health Affairs. Four applications will be accepted from any UTS institution. If approved, each new member and the Office of the President at each University of Texas health science institution will be notified.
