Institutional Accreditation Update: April 2026

As we continue preparing for our upcoming SACSCOC reaffirmation, this month we’re shining a spotlight on the “Nines” –the accreditation standards that focus on Educational Program Structure and Content. These standards ensure that every UTMB program is mission‑aligned, academically rigorous, appropriately structured, and transparent for our students.

From expectations for program length and general education to requirements for curriculum rigor, credit distribution, and accessible program information, Section 9 provides the foundation for high‑quality educational offerings across the institution. Below is an overview of each component.

Educational Program Structure and Content

9.1 - Program Content: Requires that UTMB programs have a coherent structure, are compatible with the UTMB mission and are appropriate to higher education.

9.2 - Program Length: Ensures that programs are of appropriate length and meet or exceed the absolute minimum program length requirements (120 semester credit hours for baccalaureate and 30 semester credit for any degree beyond the baccalaureate)

9.3 - General Education Requirements: Requires undergraduate programs to have a core general education requirement that has a coherent rationale, is a substantial component of the program and ensures breadth of knowledge.

9.4 - Institutional Credits for an Undergraduate Degree:  Establishes, and we must document, the fact that 25% is the minimum percentage of a UTMB degree that must be completed at UTMB for it to be considered a UTMB degree.  Closely related to UTMB transfer credit policies.

9.5 - Institutional Credits for a Graduate/Professional Degree:  Please see above but the percentage is 1/3.

9.6 - Post-Baccalaureate Rigor and Curriculum: Requires that graduate programs be progressively more advanced than undergraduate programs and have a focus on knowledge of the disciplinary literature and engagement in research and/or professional practice or training.

9.7 - Program Requirements: Program requirements must be published appropriately and be accessible to current and future students.

Thank you all the faculty and staff who have and are providing information, data and draft reviews!
