The UTMB Health chapter of the American Medical Student Association kicked off its 2013-2014 academic year with its first meeting of the year on August 26th in the Old Red Amphitheater. This was a regular meeting of the group, and served to welcome new medical students and invite them to join the group. The group's faculty advisor, Victor Sierpina, MD, also gave a short talk on "The Joys and Challenges of Primary Care".

AMSA has strong roots at UTMB Health, and the UTMB chapter focuses on community service and enhancing medical student education. In the coming year the group is planning a number of service activities, including a World AIDS Day in November 2013 and a bone marrow registration drive in January 2014. In addition, AMSA is recruiting speakers to give talks on the Affordable Care Act and the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model of healthcare. The group also hopes to help its members have the opportunity to attend the AMSA Annual Convention in March 2014.
