    In September the Mary Susan Moore Society of Houston awarded Dr. Mercedes Giles, a first-year resident in the UTMB Health Family Medicine Residency Program, one of their 2015 scholarships.

  • The 2015 AAFP National Conference in Kansas City!

    At the end of July a group of UTMB Health medical students, family medicine residents and staff attended the 2015 Annual American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) National Conference in Kansas City, MO. The AAFP National Conference is an annual conference where people connect who share the passion of family practice, learn the ins and outs of family medicine and meet with potential residency programs and employers. The 3 day event is filled with events, educational lectures, an expo hall and lots of networking and social activities.

  • UTMB Students Help Bring Dental Care to Galveston's Poor and Homeless

    After a year of planning, and hard work by Faculty, students, local dentists and Family Medicine Community Education Specialist Shannon Samuelson, the clinic held it's ribbon cutting ceremony on May 29th, 2015. The clinic is now open to provide dental services such as tooth extraction, drainage of periodontal abscesses, and treatment of gum and mouth infections at the St. Vincent's Clinic. [photos]

    On May 21st the Family Medicine Residents participated in the Annual Family Medicine Research Day showcasing the research activities of their residents and interns. This research day is coordinated by the Family Medicine research faculty, Susan Weller, PhD, Angela Shepherd, MD, Alvah Cass, MD, SM and Bret Howrey, PhD as well as staff members Alma Salazar, Cassi Boatwright and Jennie Gounah.

    The Department of Family Medicine in conjunction with support from the W.D. & Laura Nicholson Family Chair in Integrative Medicine Endowment and the Charles H. and Mary Campbell Integrative Medicine Funding presented Dr. Frenkel on Thursday, October 23, 2014 for three great lectures on the role of the primary care doctor for cancer patients and the importance of food in caring for cancer patients.
