Discover a unique opportunity to serve as the Program Director of a vibrant Family Medicine Residency Program in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). The department’s residency program is a 12-12-12 program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Reporting to the chair of the department, this opportunity is for an energetic faculty member with a desire to shape the future of family medicine and champion the next phase of growth for the residency program.
In this role the program director will work with assistant and associate program directors, departmental faculty, and other education leaders to provide leadership and innovation in residency education, curriculum, evaluation, accreditation, diversity and inclusion, wellbeing and leadership development. The program director is expected to exemplify commitment to leadership in resident education and program administration to continuously improve the program and resident physician experience. The program director will also collaborate closely with other departmental leadership, including the department chair and leadership in the areas of research, clinical, undergraduate medical education, and community outreach to work together towards the department’s strategic goals.
The program director is expected to role model outstanding clinical care, including, but not limited to, caring for patients and supervising residents in clinical settings. This position will provide direct patient care in the family medicine clinics and teaching and supervising family medicine residents. Family medicine faculty provide medical care to Galveston County residents through its three clinics, located on the UTMB Galveston campus (Island East), on the western end of Galveston Island (Island West), and in Dickinson, Texas. This physician may share on-call responsibilities, including evening and weekend hours, precept medical students and cover other clinical services as needed. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in assessment, evaluation and scholarship and will be supported by the program to further develop these skills. It is expected that this faculty member will make scholarly contributions to the department and to medicine overall.
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE
- Working with assistant/associate program directors and the department, resident selection, orientation, evaluation, and remediation; curriculum development; program evaluation, accreditation, and improvement; supervision and mentoring of family medicine residents and chief residents.
- Create a positive learning climate, foster psychological safety of residents and the residency leadership team, and role model professionalism and clinical excellence
- Advance program mission and values including promoting a diverse and inclusive environment and a holistic approach to resident recruitment.
- Participate in the evaluation of the residents and decisions related to their advancement in the training program following Milestones 2.0 through the Clinical Competency Committee
- Oversee all aspects of compliance and accreditation through the ACGME
- Oversee implementation of policies and procedures consistent with the institutional and program requirements for resident duty hours and the working environment, including moonlighting
- Define structure for weekly Program Leadership and Chief Resident meetings
- Participate in planning and implementing resident wellness activities
- Serve on the Clinical Competency Committee
- Review and revise curriculum and evaluation documents and process
- Plan and participate in program retreats and participate in the annual program reviews
- Intervene as necessary to scheduling concerns or resident issues brought to your attention by the Chief Residents
- Create structured educational activities (Morning Report, noon conferences, journal clubs) at least weekly for department faculty and resident physicians
- Participate in department conferences including Grand Rounds and Morbidity and Mortality

- Well-documented speaking, teaching, and writing skills.
- Ability to communicate with others in a clear, understandable and professional manner in person and on the phone
- Skilled in active listening, considering different perspectives, and ability to identify bias in oneself.
- Experience in precepting family medicine resident physicians in a primary care setting.
- Effective professional management skills, including the ability to plan, organize and schedule work in an efficient and productive manner, focusing on key priorities and meeting deadlines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
MD or DO degree, ABFM board certified, Texas Medical License current or eligible, DPS eligible.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Current valid/unrestricted Texas Medical License
