A PERSONAL NOTE FROM DR. YOUSSEF

I was born in New York but moved to Dallas, TX with my family at the age of 5 and have considered myself a Texan ever since then. I stayed in the Dallas area for college, graduate school, and medical school and have been fortunate enough to join our program here on the island to further my medical training.

During my time as a medical student, I aimed to maintain an open mind and allow myself to fully explore the different specialties in order to determine which field was truly right for me. My heart had always called me to primary care, because of the accessibility it allowed for my patients. Before starting medical school at UT Southwestern, I had the opportunity to graduate early from the University of Texas at Dallas. During the time between graduation and starting medical school, I was able to complete a Master’s degree in healthcare leadership and management. As a graduate student in business school, I was able to learn not only about the managerial side of the healthcare industry, but also about the shortage of primary care physicians in our country. This information intrigued me and ultimately shaped my commitment to Family Medicine.

Coming from a unique cultural background myself, as someone who is half Egyptian and half Guatemalan, I knew that I wanted to join a residency program that would allow me to serve a population of patients from all walks of life. I knew that UTMB was the right program for me as it would allow me the opportunity to form connections with a variety of patients from different backgrounds. Additionally, our program makes it a priority to help foster our specific interests to help us get to our career goals post residency whether it be through the various tracks or through specifically tailoring our rotations to make the most out of our residency experience. I look forward to continuing my practice in the state of Texas after my training at our amazing program.

My hobbies outside of medicine include spending time with family and friends, working out, traveling, cooking, and decorating my home!

Thank you so much,  Sara Hassan Youssef
