SACSCOC Reaffirmation Hub

Welcome to UTMB's SACSCOC Reaffirmation Hub

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of academic quality and institutional effectiveness. Every ten years, UTMB participates in the reaffirmation of accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)—a process that ensures we continue to meet rigorous standards for excellence in education, research, and service.

Together, we uphold UTMB’s mission and commitment to quality, ensuring that our programs and services meet the highest standards for student success and institutional integrity.

What is SACSCOC?
Learn about the role of SACSCOC and why accreditation matters for UTMB and our students.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) is the regional accrediting body for degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states, including Texas. Accreditation by SACSCOC signifies that an institution meets rigorous standards of quality in areas such as academic programs, faculty qualifications, student support, and institutional effectiveness.

SACSCOC accreditation is essential because it:

  • Validates educational quality and continuous improvement.
  • Ensures eligibility for federal funding and student financial aid.
  • Protects the value of degrees earned by students.
  • Promotes accountability and transparency in higher education.

Through reaffirmation, UTMB demonstrates its ongoing commitment to excellence and compliance with SACSCOC principles

Process of Reaffirmation
The reaffirmation process occurs every ten years and is designed to ensure that UTMB continues to meet the standards set by SACSCOC. It involves several key steps:

  1. Compliance Certification
UTMB submits a detailed report demonstrating compliance with SACSCOC’s Principles of Accreditation, covering areas such as governance, academic programs, faculty credentials, and institutional effectiveness.
  2. Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP)
A forward-looking initiative focused on improving student learning and success. The QEP reflects UTMB’s commitment to continuous improvement.
  3. Peer Review and On-Site Visit
A team of peer reviewers evaluates UTMB’s compliance report and QEP off-site, followed by an on-site visit to verify findings and engage with stakeholders.
  4. SACSCOC Board Review
The Commission reviews all materials and recommendations before granting reaffirmation of accreditation.

This process ensures that UTMB maintains the highest standards of quality and accountability in higher education.
