Karthik Mani, OTD, MSc, OTR, FACOT is an Associate Professor and Program Director (Ad-interim) in the Department of Occupational Therapy in the School of Health Professions. He received his entry-level degree in occupational therapy (OT) in India from The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University, a Master of Psychology from the University of Madras, and a post-professional doctoral degree in OT from Chatham University, Pittsburgh.
Dr. Mani began his career as an occupational therapist with an inherent passion for the profession, which led to his interest in scholarly and leadership pursuits. He began examining the issues that influence OT practice and education through survey research. The findings contributed to the science of OT in India and served as the impetus for several advocacy and research initiatives.
Dr. Mani is a staunch advocate for the profession of OT, and his professional contributions span across the world. He led the taskforce that developed the scope of practice for OT in India. He served as the NBCOT Ambassador for Texas from 2021-25. He contributed as a researcher and advisory group member that developed the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT)’s Global Strategy for OT Workforce. He is the founder and president of the Indian Occupational Therapists Think Tank, a registered non-profit society in India. He currently serves as NBCOT Ambassador Emeritus.
Before joining UTMB, Dr. Mani was an Assistant Director of External & Regulatory Affairs at NBCOT, chief occupational therapist at VOTC, and senior occupational therapist in two hospitals in India.
