Africa CDC and WHO Update Mpox Strategy as Outbreaks Persist

As Mpox spreads across Africa and beyond, Africa CDC and WHO have updated their joint Continental Response Plan to focus on outbreak control, expanded vaccination, and long-term integration into health systems. A new strain, clade Ib, has driven transmission across 28 countries, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) at the epicenter. While over 650,000 vaccine doses have been administered and diagnostic capacity has grown significantly in the DRC, ongoing conflict and a US$220 million funding gap threaten response efforts. The plan aligns with WHO’s global strategy as mpox cases rise in 60 countries, with Africa facing the heaviest burden.
