Following Mosquito Awareness Week (May 5–9), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is calling on countries in the Americas to strengthen mosquito control efforts amid a sharp rise in diseases like dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya. PAHO Director Dr. Jarbas Barbosa highlighted climate change, urbanization, poor waste management, and inadequate water systems as key drivers of mosquito breeding and disease spread.
