UTMB’s Biocontainment Care Unit (BCU) team, who serves as HHS Region 6 Regional Emerging Special Pathogens Treatment Center (RESPTC), recently came together for their Annual BCU Workshop, hosted by the SPECTRE program at UTMB.
The session was facilitated by Julie Stefanick, MEd, BSN, RN, CEN, TCRN, CPEN, Nursing Program Coordinator for the Biocontainment Care Unit, and Melissa Massey, M.Ed., Program Manager for Education and Training with the SPECTRE program. The Annual Workshop gave the BCU team an opportunity to step back from regular training routines and take a deeper look at how systems function in practice. Team members from across disciplines worked through real-world operational scenarios, mapping what happens during activation, sample collection, critical events, and containment responses.
The event encouraged open discussion and collaboration, helping the team identify where processes are clear, where uncertainties remain, and how coordination can continue to improve across the unit. These conversations reflect the shared commitment to readiness that define the RESPTC network.
