Microsoft Lync 2010 Logo

Lync @ UTMB

Information Services is pleased to announce that Microsoft Lync 2010 is now available to all of UTMB. Following a wildly successful pilot project, that included upgrading from Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 to Lync 2010, Lync is available to all faculty, staff, and students.

The application is available to install from the UTMB network or VPN. It is included on the current desktop PC image, it is available for both PCs and MACs, and the permission required to use the application is incorporated into the new-user onboarding process.

Lync is the new name for what was previously called Microsoft Office Communicator. Lync is a "unified communications" tool that lets you see who is on your network and makes it easy for you to communicate with them in a variety of ways. The software essentially integrates all the different ways an office communicates like phone, email, video conferencing, web conferencing, instant messaging, voicemail, etc., in a way that fits well with the Microsoft Office applications you're already using.

Lync provides a "presence" across all Office applications and common features across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook can help to improve the user experience.

Lync provides an integrated experience. Users can benefit from a single client experience for Instant Messaging, voice, video, meeting, application sharing, and white boarding. Lync virtually eliminates the need for fee-based conference bridges such as AT&T Conferencing or web conferencing software such as GoToMeeting.
