Day 13: Closed captions, open captions, and subtitles

Day 13: Did you know there's a difference between closed captions, open captions, and subtitles?

  • Closed Captions (CC) were designed for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing as they include background noises, speaker differentiation. They can be turned on and off (closed) and some applications allow for changing the location and format of the text.
  • Open Captions (CC) were also designed for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and include background noises, speaker differentiation, but they are open all the time.  They are edited into the video and cannot be closed.
  • Subtitles provide text alternatives to the video dialogue and assume the viewer can hear the original audio track, for example watching an English translation of a foreign film.
