DSHS Grand Rounds: Sickle Cell Disease -A Story of Discovery and Progress

Melissa Joy Frei-Jones, MD, MSCI, FAAP Pediatric Hematology. Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine Titilope Fasipe, MD, PhD Co-Director, Sickle Cell & Thalassemia Program, Texas Children’s Cancer & Hematology Center Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) was described in the medical literature more than a 100 years ago and was one of the first conditions included in newborn screening programs. Over the years, significant advances in preventive care including antibiotic prophylaxis, immunizations and the use of hydroxyurea has improved the survival of children born with SCD. However, the survival of adults with SCD has seen little change and new therapy development has lagged behind other rare diseases due to funding disparities and barriers to clinical trial enrollment. Heightened awareness of SCD and the challenges faced by people living with the disease has led to multiple initiatives on both the state and national level which seek to improve the quality of life and survival of individuals living with SCD.
