Bill Ameredes, MS, PhDProfessor (John Sealy School of Medicine)

Dr. Ameredes is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UTMB, with an adjunct appointment in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, at UTMB. Dr. Ameredes earned his B.S. in Biology (1981), and M.S. in Biology (1984), at the University of Akron, in Akron, Ohio. He earned his PhD in Physiology at the Ohio State University (1989), with support from the National Institutes of Health, and was a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Associate in six courses of physiology. During his postdoctoral training as an American Heart Association Fellow at the University of Florida (1989-1992), he taught physiology to second-year medical students, and was the Assistant Section Head of Physiology Teaching for Dental students. He became an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh (1993) with support from the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, and American Lung Association, where he lectured and facilitated problem based-learning workshops for second- and third-year medical students, for over 12 years. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed papers and 150 abstracts, and has been an editorial board member for the American Journal of Physiology and the Journal of Applied Physiology. His publications include the education and training of early-career translational researchers in Team Science.

Dr. Ameredes received an Educational Innovations grant from the Academy of Master Teachers at UTMB in May, 2008, and was inducted into the Academy in July, 2008, becoming a University of Texas System Distinguished Teaching Professor. From 2012-2014, he served as the Team Leader of the AMT Grants and Awards Team, whose focus is the review and recommendation for award of the numerous scholarly and academic grants awarded by the AMT, and the UT System Board of Regents.

Since 2009, Dr. Ameredes continues as the PI and Training Program Director of the NIEHS-supported Training Program in Environmental Toxicology at UTMB, a program that focuses on education and training of fellows in toxicology research and teaching, and has been in existence at UTMB, since 1990. In 2013, Dr. Ameredes was appointed as the KL2 Scholars Training Program Director of the NIH/NCATS Clinical and Translational Science Award program at UTMB, in which he provides direction to CTSA-supported young assistant professors and instructors in the development of their translational research and education careers. Dr. Ameredes was also appointed as a founding member and Vice Chair of the UTMB Academy of Research Mentors in 2012, in which he provides mentoring consultation to early-stage faculty at UTMB.

He also teaches respiratory physiology and toxicology to graduate students, medical students, and physician fellows, at UTMB, and has active research laboratories in which post-doctoral associates, physician fellows, and graduate students are trained in research and teaching.
