Portraits and Prints Collection

The online Portrait Gallery contains a selection of 39 portraits, each with a brief description, from the Library's collection of 6,000 images relating to the history of the biomedical sciences.

These portraits illustrate physicians and scientists from Hippocrates to Marie and Pierre Curie. The online Portrait Gallery is only a small sample of the types of illustrations contained in the Blocker History of Medicine Collections. We invite inquiries of other historical figures.

The print collection consists mostly of portraits of medical and scientific figures from the 17th through the 19th centuries. This group of woodcuts, engravings and lithographs also includes drawings of miscellaneous medical subjects such as hospitals, anatomical drawings, and reproductions of famous paintings.
