In Memoriam: Regino Perez-Polo, Ph.D., Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

GALVESTON, TX — On Monday, January 26, 2026, Jose Regino Perez-Polo, aka Jose R. Perez Jr., born December 5, 1943, died. He was predeceased by parents Fabiola Polo Lopez-Calderon and Jose (Pepe) Regino Perez-Menendez, and brother Fabio Perez-Polo. Regino was born in La Habana, Cuba, and emigrated to the US in 1960. He attended Windsor Mt. School in Lenox Massachusetts and received a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. He then received a Ph. D. from Stanford University before joining the UT and then the UTMB faculty. He retired in 2016. Regino is survived by his wife Karin Werrbach-Perez, daughters Adriana Perez and Gabriela Foster Brown and grandchildren Alexis Brown, Alison Perez, Amy Brown, Annabelle Brown, Dominic Perez, Katy Brown, Landon Perez, and Sean Foster, also great grandsons Ezra Brown, Elijah Cupp and Archer Cupp, as well as niece Amanda Perez and nephew Jan Echterbecker.
