'More Good Days, Together' for Mental Health Month

Julie Griffith, MPH
Director of Wellness, Academic Enterprise

The work we do at UTMB, teaching, mentoring, caring, leading, asks something profound of us every day. This May, the Office of Wellness is inviting you to turn some of that care inward. "More Good Days, Together" is our mental health awareness initiative, designed to make mental well-being visible, accessible, and to create more good moments in our day.

Mental Health Awareness Month offers a natural opportunity to normalize conversations around stress, burnout, and emotional well-being. In academic medicine, these experiences are not uncommon, but they are often navigated quietly. At UTMB, we are fortunate to have a range of mental and emotional health resources available to our faculty, students and staff. From free and confidential counseling, 24/7 access to licensed therapists and psychiatrists by phone or video, and curated learning experiences and reference guides, our aim is to ensure that support is both visible and easy to access.

For those looking for more structured opportunities, we’ve partnered with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and Bent on Healthy Living Wellness Center, to offer a range of events throughout the month. Weekly beach yoga sessions on Wednesday mornings provide a chance to start the day grounded and outdoors. Small-group expressive art workshops offer a creative, meditative outlet, an opportunity to step away from mental demands and engage your hands and mind in a different way. Then, later in the month, we will host a restorative yoga and sound bath experience that will create space for deeper relaxation and restoration. In addition, look out for “Good Day Boost” pop up activities throughout the month. These are informal, come and go wellness touchpoints designed to offer mental breaks and moments of lightness into your day.

More Good Days, Together is about shifting our culture in small, tangible ways: increasing awareness of available resources, encouraging connection through activities, and making it easier to engage in brief moments of reset throughout the day. Please email wellness@utmb.edu for more information or questions.

Here’s to more good days, together!
