About Me

Dr. Mathis is an Assistant Professor, in the UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine & Community Health and currently serves as the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and Director of the Integrative and Behavioral Health Fellowship.  

Dr. Mathis earned his BA from Baylor University and his MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch. He completed his residency at Memorial Family Medicine and further specialized in Integrative and Behavioral Medicine at UTMB. He is board-certified in Family Medicine and Integrative Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He also holds an MBA in Healthcare Management, an MPH, and the Certified Physician Executive credential.

Dr.  Mathis is a family medicine physician, academic leader, and national advocate. He provides clinical excellence, graduate medical education, and integrative care to one of the nation's premier academic health centers. He is the program director for the Integrative and Behavioral Medicine Fellowship Program and the director of the John Sealy School of Medicine's Doctoring and Clinical Skills Course.

Clinically, Dr. Mathis practices both inpatient and outpatient family medicine at UTMB. He has championed the expansion of integrative medicine at UTMB, including an acupuncture clinic and an active research collaboration focused on integrative oncology and cancer survivorship. He is the faculty advisor for the UTMB chapter of the American Medical Association. His work reflects a commitment to developing future physician leaders through mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovative curriculum design.

Nationally, Dr. Mathis is a recognized voice for young physicians in organized medicine. He is a past Chair of the AMA Young Physicians Section and has served on the boards of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Texas Medical Association, and the Texas Academy of Family Physicians. He is a past president of the Galveston County Medical Society and currently serves on the TMA Council on Socioeconomics. His additional leadership includes service on the Texas Medical Association Foundation board and the Smart Family Literacy Board of Directors.

His approach to advocacy reflects his philosophy to develop physician leaders to improve care and lead the future of medicine,  a standard he applies in the exam room, the classroom, and the policy arena.
