UTMB’s “Is It Worth It?” DUI Awareness Event Returns

A realistic, high-impact experience aimed at preventing impaired and distracted driving will return to Galveston Friday. The University of Texas Medical Branch Trauma Services will host its signature “Is It Worth It?” DUI awareness event on Friday, July 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Moody Methodist Church (2803 53rd St.).

Created to reach high school and college-aged students, this live, interactive program brings the consequences of reckless driving to life through a staged crash scene, complete with emergency response from local EMS, fire, and law enforcement agencies. The scene is followed by firsthand accounts from speakers whose lives have been affected by DUI incidents—including survivors, medical professionals, and families who have lost loved ones.

“Our goal is to make a deep, lasting impact—one that stays with students long after they leave the event,” said Preston Huff at UTMB Trauma Services. “We want them to think twice before getting behind the wheel impaired or distracted. We want them to ask, Is it worth it?

Attendees will also engage in hands-on activities, such as simulated impairment exercises and interactive learning stations that demonstrate the dangers of driving under the influence.

The event is free and open to the public. Educators, parents, and community leaders are encouraged to bring students and young drivers to participate.
