Welcome
The Sealy Center on Aging (SCOA), an independent, multidisciplinary component of The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health), focuses on improving the health and well-being of older adults through interdisciplinary research, education, clinical care, and community engagement. Supported by endowment funds from the Sealy and Smith Foundation, SCOA encompasses over 50 Senior Fellows and more than 50 affiliated Fellows from all five UTMB schools as well as numerous institutes.
Students & Trainees
The Sealy Center on Aging supports outstanding education and training programs in aging and geriatric medicine.
- Two NIH training programs ( T32 and T35) prepare predoctoral, postdoctoral, and medical students for careers in aging research.
- Medical students train through the Geriatric Track and clinical/research electives.
- Residents complete geriatric rotations, and fellows a one-year Geriatric Fellowship.
- Students and trainees engage in mentorship, workshops, seminars, and the Annual Forum on Aging, where they present research alongside leading investigators and compete for awards.

Our Services
Researchers
Staff and resources at the Sealy Center on Aging support a vibrant research community with over $25 million in federal funding across 30+ active grants.
Facilities include:
- 26 offices adjacent to the Division of Geriatric Medicine
- The Texas Healthy Age-Tech Initiative Instrumented Home
- The WEARHouse, an institutional resource for aging researchers using wearable sensors.

Community Members & Older Adults
We believe in research with the community, not just about it. Through our Community Connection Initiative, launched in 2022, we share research insights, educational events, and volunteer opportunities with older adults in Galveston County and beyond. We offer:
- The Quarterly Community Connection Newsletter (email or mail) - now reaching over 1,400 subscribers.
- Monthly presentations at senior centers and OLLI-UTMB.
- Caregiver Connection, a biweekly support group in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association.
- AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer opportunities for adults 55+.
- The SCOA Learning Center is open to community members age 55+ for educational talks, computer access, and health resources.
