The Mexican Health and Aging Study Turns 20

Dec 17, 2021, 05:22 AM by SCOA

The MHAS is turned 20 this year!!

The Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS) started its first baseline in 2001, following up a cohort of 15,000 persons aged 50 and older in Mexico. The study has refreshed the sample twice since then and has supported several ancillary studies including for exposure to heavy metals, and blood & saliva samples for the genetics of Alzheimer’s disease, and biomarkers for other chronic diseases. Wave 6 of the study is planned for this Winter 2021-2022.

The 6th Annual Meeting of the MHAS Users took place October 27-29, 2021 (Virtual), in collaboration with the Mexican National Institute of Geriatrics. The program includes over 30 presentations in English and Spanish from established investigators and students. The Opening Session featured ‘Reflections at 20 Years of the MHAS’ from special guests – including a representative from NIA/NIH, from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) in the U.S., from the Mexican National Institute of Statistics, and from the Mexican National Institute of Geriatrics. The MHAS is funded by the NIA/NIH (grant R01 AG018016, PI: Rebeca Wong) and the Mexican National Institute of Statistics (INEGI). Scholars from several institutions in Mexico and the U.S. collaborate to complete the study. Visit www.MHASweb.org CONGRATULATIONS TO the MHAS family at UTMB!

MHAS has been hosted at UTMB since 2008, with special thanks to the support from SCOA and the WHO/PAHO Collaborating Center at UTMB.
