Recently, Dr. Susan McLellan spoke with KPRC Houston about preparedness efforts within UTMB’s Biocontainment Care Unit (BCU) and the importance of maintaining readiness for special pathogen events.

During the interview, Dr. McLellan discussed how the BCU team stays prepared through ongoing training, simulation exercises, and coordinated planning efforts designed to support safe, effective patient care during high-consequence infectious disease events. She also highlighted the collaboration required between clinical teams, infection prevention, biosafety, emergency management, and other support departments to maintain operational readiness.

As the Regional Emerging Special Pathogens Treatment Center for HHS Region 6, UTMB continues to support preparedness efforts both within the institution and across the region through the work of the SPECTRE program.
