Jarrel De Matas, PhD

Assistant Professor
Department of Bioethics & Health Humanities

About Me

Jarrel De Matas is an assistant professor in the Department of Bioethics and Health Humanities and holds the Harry Huntt Ransom Fellowship in Medical Humanities. His research in narrative medicine focuses on how storytelling illuminates the ways in which individuals and communities understand health, science, and technology.

While his ongoing research brings together Caribbean literature, global science fiction, and postcolonial criticism, his current research interests focus on artificial intelligence in health and education, including AI ethics, AI literacy, health communication, and the ethical and cultural implications of AI-mediated decision-making. He is interested in developing approaches to AI literacy that enable students, educators, and health professionals to critically engage with AI-generated information and understand the social and ethical consequences of emerging technologies.

In addition to his academic work, Dr. De Matas is a newspaper columnist for the Daily Express in Trinidad and Tobago and a guest contributor to the Galveston County Daily News. Dr. De Matas’s first academic book Caribbean Futurism and Beyond (Routledge 2026) examines Caribbean futurism through storytelling across the region.
