UTMB Aerospace Medicine is developing an Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Fellowship, a new training program that connects the physiology of high-pressure undersea environments with the low-pressure demands of high altitude and spaceflight. The fellowship is scheduled to begin in 2027 and will prepare physicians to care for patients and crews across the full range of pressure-extreme settings.

As human spaceflight extends beyond low Earth orbit, physicians will need a deeper command of how pressure-related physiology shapes health, performance, and operational readiness. Undersea and hyperbaric medicine has spent decades answering those questions at depth. UTMB's fellowship extends the same foundations upward, applying them to altitude physiology, dysbaric injury prevention, extravehicular activity, and the medical considerations that inform spacesuit and vehicle design.

Fellows will train in diving and hyperbaric medicine, decompression science, and operational medicine while working alongside UTMB's Aerospace Medicine faculty. The curriculum links undersea physiology with the evolving demands of aviation and spaceflight, creating a training pathway that few programs offer.

UTMB is recruiting faculty to help build the program. The Aerospace Medicine division is hiring an Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice to provide leadership in fellowship education, research, and collaboration with academic, governmental, military, and commercial partners. The roles suit physicians who hold board certification in Aerospace Medicine and in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine, and who want to shape how the next generation trains for medicine in extreme environments.
