John Marshall grew up in Washington State where he received his B.S. in Biology, B.A. in English, and M.D. from the University of Washington. After acquiring several too-expensive hobbies in Washington, he moved to Texas and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. After his Internal Medicine residency, he spent a year as assistant instructor and one of five chief medical residents at UT Southwestern, attending on the wards and guiding and contributing to resident education and the program’s transition into the COVID era with his four other colleagues.
Thereafter, he started his residency in Aerospace Medicine at UTMB where he completed his MPH degree and aerospace medicine training to then be double boarded in Internal and Aerospace Medicine. He was hired straight into commercial space at Axiom Space and immediately served as the deputy flight surgeon for the Axiom-2 mission, console mission support for Axiom-3, and the lead flight surgeon for the Axiom-4 mission. In his time at Axiom, he also served as subject matter expert and medical support for suits and station development and testing. He also stood up the Axiom Space Aerospace Medicine rotation for various trainee rotators, including UTMB.
Dr. Marshall has gathered extensive experience in education of all levels over the past 20 years, from high school internships to undergraduate/graduate medical education to astronaut medical training, from primary content development to program administration. In 2026, he joined the Aerospace Medicine Division’s core faculty as Associate Program Director and is very much looking forward to guiding current and future generations of aerospace medicine healthcare providers.
