Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 05/29/06 A new clinic in Clear Lake and improved patient service in Galveston are two ways the University of Texas Medical Branch hopes to augment the portion of its patients with private insurance. At a town meeting this week, university President John Stobo said improving customer service was essential to putting Galveston’s largest employer on a secure financial footing. Early next month, UTMB will roll out a plan to erase a $20 million operating deficit and create a 2 to 4 percent cushion. The plan will have to achieve that goal while keeping up with medical inflation that is running between 6 and 8 percent annually. The moves almost certainly will involve job cuts. They most likely will consist of some combination of layoffs, attrition and not filling open positions, Stobo said.
