Definitions:
Panopto's captioning options
Auto-captioning is a good first step in removing barriers to content. All videos we provide should have Closed caption as an option.
Important: Auto-captioning is only 80-90% accurate and not guaranteed to meet full ADA compliance so it is important to review and correct captioning errors for things such as proper names and medical terminology. This must be done for each video individually. Human-generated captions may be needed for accuracy if students have formal ADA accommodation requests.
Uses Automated Speech Recognition (ASR).
Creators can add Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) generated captions to their Panopto videos. In this article, learn how to add and edit ASR captioning. Note: Machine-generated captions are not the same as human transcriptions; as such, reviewing and editing ASR captions for accuracy is recommended.
Uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
Smart Chapters are an automatic table of contents created through OCR, which identifies content within the video rather than from uploaded PowerPoint or Keynote presentations. In this article, you will learn how to add, remove, and edit smart chapters from your Panopto videos. This feature is ideal for making longer recordings such as scheduled remote recordings or meeting imports easier to navigate. It also easily allows entries to be generated when slides are recorded as a screen capture, such as when recording with Panopto Capture.
Create and upload your captions
You can create and upload captions using a regular text editor such as TextEdit, or NotePad. Panopto supports *.srt, *.ashx, *.vtt, *.txt, and *.dxfp files as captions for a video. Please note: Panopto does not support ANSI file encoding.
Information about using transcripts with Panapto
You can transcribe your recordings with Microsoft OneNote and Word web versions (Microsoft 1:24 min) and then do occasional updates to the content as needed and then create an uploadable captions file. Microsoft is a little better at proper names and terms than Panopto.
