Dr. Hussein Pothiwalla is an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine with a focus in hospital medicine.
Dr. Pothiwalla began his career as an OBGYN resident before transitioning to internal medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where he focused on performing bedside procedures and championed initiatives to reduce hospital-acquired infections.
Before joining UTMB, Dr. Pothiwalla served as an Academic Hospitalist at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. There, he participated in a pilot program to improve patient care through bedside procedures, and he played a key role in managing critical patients in an Intermediate Care Unit. His commitment to quality improvement led him to establish a program that significantly reduced central line days among internal medicine patients.
Dr. Pothiwalla’s scholarly work includes studies on oral cancer screening, COVID-19-associated mucormycosis, and presentations on central line infections and ARDS management. He holds a medical degree from the University of Nairobi and is board certified by the ABIM in internal medicine.
