We are seeking highly motivated candidates who are willing to establish or continue their careers as a faculty member in the Division of General Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine in Galveston, Texas. We seek candidates willing to excel in teaching, scholarship, clinical care, and service.

For the Academic Hospitalist track, all our teams are currently teaching teams with residents and students. We are on a two-week block system to match up with the resident rotations and each faculty is expected to cover 12 blocks / 24 weeks per year. Two weeks of vacation are included to account for a total of 26 weeks of service. Our rotations start on Saturday, and the faculty member is on service for 14 days to the second Friday. Typically, we are on a two weeks on/two weeks off cycle. We have a faculty Nocturnist available from 5 M to 5 AM to cover overnight admissions. In addition, we have a Surgical Co-Management Service that assists surgical teams with medical issues on their admitted patients. This service is primarily faculty direct care with resident support Monday to Friday. 

For candidates that are seeking a hybrid model of care with both inpatient and outpatient care opportunities, we have a model wherein they can cover 12 weeks / 6 blocks of inpatient teaching wards throughout the year and then have seven sessions of private/precept clinic in our team-based model. 

For the Academic Generalist track, we have as unique team-based approach to care. Faculty, along with housestaff, are assigned to one of three teams and patient care is kept within each team, in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. Outpatient Afterhours call is shared among all faculty, with a nurse triage line being the first point of contact. Afterhours call for the faculty occurs approximately two to three times a year for a week at a time.

The Academic Generalist position is an 100% outpatient position in a private practice model serving as a primary care physician. Practice location will be at our Primary Care Pavilion on Galveston Island, or at our Victory Lakes Multi-Specialty Clinic in League City.  Students and residents will rotate with the Academic Generalist.  In a typical week, the Academic Generalist will see patients face to face for 8 sessions (half days) with 2 additional sessions for Inbasket management. Further reductions in clinical effort are based on teaching and service obligations to the School of Medicine and UTMB Health. 

The qualified candidate will be Board Certified / Board Eligible in Internal Medicine and completed residency in an approved ACGME program or equivalent. Starting salary is commensurate with experience. Applicant must be a US Citizen, Permanent Resident, or eligible for H1 Visa; We are unable to sponsor J1 Visas at this time. 


We are seeking highly motivated Advanced Practice Providers (APPs)—Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants to join the Division of General Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine in Galveston, Texas. APPs play a key role in providing high-quality outpatient care, collaborating with faculty and clinical staff to ensure comprehensive, patient-centered services.

As of fall 2025, we have open positions in our inpatient Advanced Practice Provideroutpatient Advanced Practice Provider, and Assistance Professor.

  • Outpatient Advanced Practice Provider: Galveston- Internal Medicine- General Medicine

    Position Summary
    Performs responsible clinical care in collaboration with the unit physician and under approved protocols, manages the medical aspects of care in the observation, assessment, diagnosis, intervention, evaluation, rehabilitation, care and counsel, and health teachings of persons who are ill, injured or infirm or experiencing changes in normal health processes; and in the promotion and maintenance of health of prevention of illness in a clinical setting.

    Essential Responsibilities 

    • Performs individualized history and physical examinations for diverse populations inclusive of social determinants of health.
    • Orders and interprets diagnostic testing in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
    • Diagnoses acute, episodic, and chronic diseases.
    • Develops a comprehensive plan of care that encompasses evidence-based practice guidelines, practice protocols, Medicare, Medicaid, and other state and federal regulations.
    • Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
    • Provides appropriate education for current health diagnoses as well as anticipatory guidance for health promotion and disease prevention applicable to the individual’s health and socioeconomic status.
    • Monitors plan of care for cost-effectiveness and the achievement of expected improvements, while openly seeking feedback from patients, significant others, colleagues, allied health, appropriate referrals, and collaborating physician to enhance quality outcomes.
    • Works independently to full scope of practice in compliance with the Texas Nurse Practice Act with acknowledgement of collaborating physician availability for consultation and collaboration.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
    Completion of a graduate level (or higher) nurse practitioner program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)

  • Inpatient Advanced Practice Provider: Galveston-Internal Medicine-General Medicine
    Position Summary
    The Department of Internal Medicine - General Internal Medicine is seeking a skilled Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our Hospital Medicine team. This role involves providing comprehensive inpatient care in a collaborative academic environment alongside experienced physicians. Performs responsible clinical care in collaboration with the unit physician and under approved protocols, manages the medical aspects of care in the observation, assessment, diagnosis, intervention, evaluation, rehabilitation, care and counsel, and health teachings of persons who are ill, injured or infirm or experiencing changes in normal health processes; and in the promotion and maintenance of health of prevention of illness in a clinical setting.

    Essential Responsibilities 

    • Clinical Care
    • Perform thorough history and physical exams.
    •  Order and interpret labs, imaging, and procedures.
    • Develop and implement treatment plans with attending physicians.
    • Manage hospitalized patients with complex conditions.
    • Perform procedures within scope (e.g., central lines, LPs, paracentesis).
    • Document care and facilitate admissions/discharges.

    Position Summary
    UTMB is seeking a full-time ambulatory care physician at the rank of Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice within the Division of General Medicine. This position emphasizes high-quality, patient-centered clinical care, active participation in teaching, and engagement in the academic mission of the department. The successful candidate will join a dedicated team of faculty focused on improving health outcomes and advancing excellence in medical education.

    Essential Responsibilities
    • Provide comprehensive outpatient care for adult patients with a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions.
    • Supervise and teach medical students, residents, and other learners in a clinical and didactic settings.
    • Participate in departmental quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
    • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams—including nursing, pharmacy, social work, and rehabilitation—to optimize patient outcomes.
    • Contribute to curriculum development, clinical skills training, and academic programs.
    Minimum Qualifications
    MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
    Board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine.

    Eligible for medical licensure in the State of Texas.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Experience in an academic medical center or teaching environment.
    Demonstrated involvement in scholarly activity, quality improvement projects, or curriculum development.
    Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
