About the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine
The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine (PCCSM) at UTMB is a leader in the delivery of advanced respiratory, critical care, and sleep medicine services. With 13 faculty and 12 fellows, the Division combines excellence in clinical care, research, and education to serve patients across UTMB’s four hospital campuses — Galveston, League City, Clear Lake.

The Division provides comprehensive care for a broad spectrum of pulmonary and critical care and sleep conditions, including obstructive and restrictive lung diseases, pulmonary vascular disease, lung cancer, and complex respiratory failure. Faculty members serve as key leaders in UTMB’s intensive care units, ambulatory pulmonary and sleep medicine, delivering around-the-clock critical care and advancing evidence-based practices through multidisciplinary collaboration.

PCCSM also maintains a robust presence in Sleep Medicine, offering diagnostic and therapeutic services for sleep-related disorders through the UTMB Sleep Centers.

The ACGME-accredited Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program provides comprehensive training across all aspects of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Fellows benefit from exposure to diverse patient populations, advanced technologies, and a collaborative learning environment that promotes professional growth and clinical expertise.

Research within the Division spans clinical, translational, and basic science domains, with active projects in lung cancer and screening, COPD, ILD, pulmonary hypertension, and sleep-disordered breathing. Faculty collaborate across UTMB’s research institutes and centers, supporting innovation that bridges bench to bedside.

  • Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice, Internal Medicine-Pulmonary/Critical Care, Galveston Campus

    The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine and the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston, Texas, is seeking a Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine physician at the Assistant Professor level.

    The successful candidate should have an MD degree or equivalent and satisfactory completion of a Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship from an ACGME accredited program. Candidate must be eligible for Texas medical licensure and be board certified/eligible in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

    This position will involve a mix of outpatient and inpatient clinical activities. Physician will work up to 26 weeks of inpatient MICU/consult service and have up to 4 clinic sessions per week. Salary and benefits are negotiable and commensurate with experience.

  • Critical Care-Advanced Nurse Practitioner, League City & Clear Lake Campus
    Position Summary

    UTMB is seeking a full-time Advanced Practice Provider within the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. The APP will work collaboratively with physicians to provide comprehensive pulmonary and critical care services across an inpatient setting. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated clinician who values teamwork, education, and quality improvement in an academic environment.

    Essential Responsibilities

    • Provide high-quality, patient-centered care to individuals with acute and chronic pulmonary conditions, including asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary hypertension.

    • Provide inpatient ICU, including co-management of critically ill patients, ventilator management, and collaboration with ICU consultants.
    • Conduct comprehensive assessments, including histories, physical exams, diagnostic testing, and interpretation of results.
    • Provide inpatient care in the intensive care unit (ICU) under physician supervision, including ventilator management and co-management of critically ill patients.
    • Perform or assist with procedures such as thoracentesis, arterial line insertion, central line placement, and other interventions as credentialed and trained.
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other allied health professionals—to coordinate and optimize patient care.
    • Educate patients and families about disease management, treatment plans, and preventive care.
    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, case discussions, and evidence-based practice reviews within the Division.
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including respiratory therapy, nursing, radiology, and surgery—for optimal patient outcomes.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • Master’s or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
    • Current licensure (or eligibility) as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) in the State of Texas.
    • National certification in an applicable specialty area (e.g., Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP, or NCCPA-certified PA-C).
    • Current BLS and ACLS certification.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in pulmonary, critical care, or hospital medicine.
    • Experience in an academic medical center or teaching environment.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.

This position emphasizes high-quality inpatient and outpatient pulmonary and critical care, active participation in teaching, and engagement in the academic mission of the department. The successful candidate will join a team of faculty dedicated to providing exceptional pulmonary and critical care services, advancing clinical education, and contributing to scholarly and quality improvement initiatives.

     

    Essential Responsibilities

    • Provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient pulmonary and critical care, including management of chronic lung diseases, acute respiratory failure, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and ICU patients.
    • Provide inpatient ICU and pulmonary consult services, including co-management of critically ill patients, ventilator management, and collaboration with ICU consultants.
    • Participate in procedures such as bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, and other pulmonary interventions, as appropriate to training and experience.
    • Supervise and teach medical students, residents, and fellows in both clinical and procedural pulmonary and critical care settings.
    • Participate in departmental and divisional quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including respiratory therapy, nursing, radiology, and surgery—for optimal patient outcomes.
    • Contribute to curriculum development, clinical skills training, and pulmonary/critical care-focused academic programs.

    Position Summary
    The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch seeks a Division Chief of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine to lead a clinical and academic division serving Southeast Texas through UTMB's growing multi-campus health system. The successful candidate will oversee clinical operations across multiple sites, direct an ACGME-accredited fellowship program, develop the division's research portfolio, and collaborate with departmental leadership to advance the tripartite mission of patient care, education, and investigation.

    Division Strengths and Resources
    The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine currently includes faculty with expertise spanning the subspecialty's clinical and research domains. Division programs include:
    • Comprehensive Lung Cancer Screening Program - established program serving the regional population with screening, diagnostic evaluation, and multidisciplinary care coordination
    • Interventional Pulmonology - advanced bronchoscopy procedures including navigational bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound
    • Sleep Disorders Center - full-service laboratory providing diagnostic polysomnography and treatment for adult and pediatric sleep disorders
    • Critical Care Services - faculty provide consultative and direct patient care across medical ICUs at Jennie Sealy Hospital, John Sealy Hospital, and affiliated sites, with exposure to high-acuity trauma, burn, and complex medical-surgical cases
    The division operates an ACGME-accredited three-year Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship (Program #1564821112) that participates in the National Resident Matching Program. Fellows receive comprehensive training in pulmonary medicine, critical care, and sleep medicine, with opportunities for scholarly activity and research mentorship.

     

    Essential Responsibilities

    • Clinical Leadership
      • Provide strategic direction for clinical operations across UTMB's multi-campus system, with particular attention to expanding access to subspecialty pulmonary and sleep services in Galveston, Clear Lake, League City, and Angleton-Danbury
      • Recruit, mentor, and retain clinical faculty to support service line growth and ensure sustainable call coverage for critical care and consultative services
      • Collaborate with hospital leadership to optimize critical care delivery models, quality improvement and patient safety, ICU staffing, operational efficiency and consultative services that meet the needs of UTMB's clinical strategic priorities across the campuses, including its Level I Trauma Center and tertiary referral volume
      • Maintain an active clinical practice in pulmonary, critical care, or sleep medicine appropriate to academic rank and administrative responsibilities 
    • Educational Leadership
      • Oversee the ACGME-accredited Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, ensuring compliance with program requirements, supporting fellow recruitment, and maintaining match competitiveness
      • Direct subspecialty education for Internal Medicine residents rotating through pulmonary and critical care services, coordinating teaching conferences, simulation training, and procedural instruction
      • Foster faculty development in clinical teaching and provide mentorship for junior faculty pursuing academic promotion
    • Research and Scholarship
      • Develop the division's research portfolio through identification of collaborative opportunities, mentorship of faculty investigators, and pursuit of extramural funding
      • Leverage UTMB's research infrastructure, including the Galveston National Laboratory and Sealy Center for Vaccine Development, to advance investigation in pulmonary infectious diseases, acute respiratory failure, or other areas aligned with institutional strengths
      • Support quality improvement initiatives, outcomes research, and scholarly activity among fellows and faculty

    • Administrative and Strategic Responsibilities
      • Manage division budget, optimize resource allocation, and work with departmental leadership on revenue cycle performance and payer contracting
      • Participate in departmental strategic planning, faculty recruitment, and institutional committees as assigned
      • Collaborate with nursing leadership, respiratory therapy, and allied health professionals to ensure high-quality, team-based care delivery
      • Foster relationships with regional referral networks, community physicians, and healthcare systems to enhance UTMB's role as the academic medical center for Southeast Texas

    Minimum Qualifications

    • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution
    • Board certification in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease or Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (or equivalent)
    • Eligibility for medical licensure in Texas
    • Academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor at an accredited medical school, or qualifications consistent with appointment at this level at UTMB
    • Demonstrated leadership experience in clinical program development, education, or research
    • Track record of effective collaboration with administrative, clinical, and academic colleagues

     

    Valued Experience

    • Experience in multi-site or health system operations
    • Fellowship training or expertise in interventional pulmonology, sleep medicine, or other focused area of pulmonary or critical care medicine
    • Record of extramural funding from NIH, foundations, or industry sponsors
    • Leadership roles in fellowship or residency education, including program director or associate program director experience
    • Involvement in professional societies, editorial boards, or national committees relevant to pulmonary, critical care, or sleep medicine
    • Experience with value-based care models, quality metrics, or population health initiatives
    • Leadership development through participation in structured programs such as leadership academies, executive education, or formal management and communication workshops
