David Callender, MD, MBA, FACS*

David Callender, MD, MBA
President, UTMB

Dr. David L. Callender has served as President of the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health) since 2007. He is a head and neck surgeon with expertise in head and neck cancers.

A native of Wichita Falls, Texas, Dr. Callender received his medical degree from and completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine. He served an oncology fellowship with the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. He also completed an MBA at the University of Houston. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Before assuming the presidency of UTMB Health, Dr. Callender served as Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer for the UCLA Hospital System from 2004 to 2007. He had previously served in several leadership roles at M.D. Anderson, culminating in his position as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer from 2001 to 2004.

Under his leadership, UTMB Health has advanced significantly in all three of its mission areas: training tomorrow’s health care workforce; developing new ways to diagnose, preventing and treating illnesses through world-class research; and improving access to quality, evidence-based health care for the people of Texas and beyond.

Deborah Carlson, PhD

Dr. Carlson is an Audiologist and has worked for the Center for Audiology & Speech Pathology since October 1989. Dr. Carlson obtained her Ph.D. degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in August 1986. She holds a dual Master's of Science Degree in Communication Disorders and Sciences and in Rehabilitation Administration and Services and a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Pathology from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL granted in May 1980.

Dr. Carlson received Fellows Honors from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 2007 and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Audiology. She has participated on a variety of Boards and Committees for AAA and ASHA, served on the Texas State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, is a past President and Founding Member of the Texas Academy of Audiology, and is a Past President of the American Academy of Audiology.

Dr. Darling attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison and graduated with a BS in chemistry. He attended the Chicago Medical School where he was invited to join the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism in Medicine Honor Societies before receiving his MD in 2012. He completed his Residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 2017 and immediately joined the faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology at UTMB Health.

Dr. Makishima received her Medical Degree (1992) and PhD in Philosophy (1998) from Kyushu University School of Medicine, Fukuoka, Japan. She completed her Residency and Clinical Fellowship at the Department Otorhinolaryngology at Kyushu University Medical Hospital in 1994, as well as her Clinical Fellowship in 1998. She is Board Certified by The Otorhinolaryngological Society of Japan. She joined UTMB in 2005.

Joel Patterson, MD

Dr. Joel Patterson was born in Houston, Texas. After growing up primarily in Colorado, he attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas and in 1985, he received his Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) in chemistry. After a few years of working as a research chemist in the field of civil engineering, Dr. Patterson moved to Galveston where he began his medical career. He was granted his Doctor of Medicine (cum laude) with research honors from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in 1991 and continued his postgraduate training in neurosurgery, completing his residency in 1997. As a medical student, he was the recipient of the Medical Student Research Award, the Donald Duncan Memorial Scholarship in Anatomy, was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, and was a Co-Director of the 32nd Annual National Student Research Forum in 1991. He completed his neurosurgical training at UTMB in 1997.

On completion of his neurosurgical training, he and his family moved to Texarkana, Texas where he joined a successful neurosurgical practice. While in Texarkana, Dr. Patterson was instrumental in the establishment of a Level II Trauma Center at one of the community hospitals and served on numerous committees with a variety of leadership roles. In 2003, he returned to Galveston where, in addition to establishing a robust clinical practice, he has been an integral participant in a number of educational, clinical, and administrative endeavors.

After Hurricane Ike devastated the community and institution in 2008, Dr. Patterson was asked to assume leadership of and rebuild the Division of Neurosurgery at UTMB. Despite some very trying times and seemingly insurmountable challenges, the faculty and residents within the Division have been successful in re-establishing the clinical practice, maintaining accreditation of the training program, and contributing to the advancement of the field through scholarly activity.

Dr. Resto graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1992 with a bachelor degree in Chemistry.  He then completed the combined M.D., Ph.D. program at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 2000.  His doctoral degree is from the Department of Human Genetics for dissertation work in cancer genetics.  He next pursued internship training in General Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by residency training in the Harvard Combined Program in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.  In 2006, he completed advanced clinical fellowship training in Head and Neck Oncology, Skull Base, and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston.  He joined the full time faculty staff at UTMB in July, 2006. 

Clinically, he focuses on facial plastics, reconstructive surgery, and skull base surgery.   Scientifically, Dr. Resto directs a basic science laboratory focused on the study of the molecular mechanisms important for lymphatic metastasis and tumor tolerance.

Dr. Siddiqui completed her training in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery in 2006 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, where she also finished her General Surgery Internship. Before joining UTMB in March 2010 as an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology, she was in private practice as a general Otolaryngologist in the suburbs of Dallas. Dr. Siddiqui comes to UTMB well-trained, having completed her medical school at the Aga Khan University Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan. She also speaks English, Urdu, Hindi, and French fluently, as well as some Thai and Arabic.

As a general Otolaryngologist, Dr. Siddiqui enjoys seeing both pediatric and adult patients with a variety of ear, nose and throat problems, such as sinusitis, ear infections, tonsillitis, snoring, sleep apnea, allergy, hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness, and neck masses. She is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology.

Dr. Watts’ clinical interests are head and neck surgery, sleep apnea, and microvascular and facial plastic reconstructive surgery.  She is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology. 

Dr. Watts earned her MD degree from the University of Maryland. She completed her internship and residency in otolaryngology at the Medical College of Georgia.  She also completed a fellowship in microvascular and facial plastic reconstructive surgery at the Oregon Health and Science University, where she previously was employed.
