PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency Program
The PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency Program at UTMB is a twelve-month, ASHP pre-candidate program of training and experience based upon the ASHP Accreditation Standard for PGY2 Pharmacy Residency and the ASHP Required Competency Areas, Goals, and Objectives for PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency Programs 2023. The program provides flexibility to meet the needs and interests of the individual resident while ensuring the development of clinical competency in ambulatory care pharmacy practice.
This residency will offer the resident the opportunity to rotate through UTMB Health System pharmacist-run primary care and specialty clinics.
Patient care is provided in multidisciplinary settings and the ambulatory care pharmacy resident will interact with clinical pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, nurses, patients, and caregivers to provide comprehensive care to patients in ambulatory care. Daily activities will include interviewing and managing patients in the clinic setting, providing additional phone-based care to patients, initiating, reviewing, and updating clinic policies and procedures, and implementing quality assurance programs for current and new clinics. The ambulatory care resident will be expected to be proficient at working in various clinics for professional growth.
Purpose Statement
Our Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and a PGY1 pharmacy residency program to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in Ambulatory Care. This PGY2 residency provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporate both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete the PGY2 Ambulatory Care pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacist and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible for attainment of board certification in Ambulatory Care.
Learning Experiences
The UTMB Ambulatory Care residency program will give residents the opportunity to rotate through three of its campuses which will expose residents to different populations and experiences. Through said experiences, residents will be able to provide exceptional patient care and be part of an interdisciplinary team. Residents will be provided with a list of goals and objectives upon starting each new learning experience.
All learning experiences will be four-week rotations. Residents will be given the opportunity to rotate through the three different UTMB campuses.
