Spiritual Care for Patients with Cancer
Volunteer for Research on Spiritual Care at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB)
Purpose: For many patients with cancer, particularly those with advanced cancer, spiritual wellness is an important element of their overall health and wellbeing. The purpose of this clinical trial is to investigate whether interventions that provide spiritual support and care for patients with advanced cancer improve patients’ spiritual well-being and affect the medical care they receive.
Who can join?
We are looking for patients who:
- Are being treated for advanced cancer at UTMB
- Belong to a faith organization (e.g., church, temple, mosque, etc.) and routinely engage in its religious activities
What participation involves
Study participation will last about two months and include:
- Two brief (~30 min) interviews
- Two sessions of spiritual care with an assigned spiritual care team member, completed either remotely or in person
Compensation
Eligible participants receive compensation for completing the study.

This study is an IRB-approved (Protocol #: 24-08027855), NIH-sponsored, multi-site randomized trial of spiritual care interventions for patients with advanced cancer. Mukaila Raji, MD, MS (Pharm), is the UTMB site Principal Investigator of this study.
