Dr. César Ugarte-Gil is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the School of Public and Population Health (SPPH) at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), where he also holds the Robert E. Shope, MD Professorship in Infectious Disease Epidemiology. He earned his PhD in Global Disease Epidemiology and Control from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, an MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and his MD from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia.
Dr. Ugarte-Gil’s research centers on respiratory infections, including tuberculosis (TB), COVID-19, influenza, and other emerging pathogens. His work emphasizes the validation and implementation of point-of-care diagnostic tools within primary healthcare settings. He has a particular interest in the intersection of TB with comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus and depression, and how these conditions influence treatment outcomes. He also leads research on the impact of TB in incarcerated populations.
In addition to his work on TB, Dr. Ugarte-Gil studies Bartonella bacilliformis, a neglected bacterial infection endemic to the Andean region, along with other tropical diseases common in Latin America. He has served on the Expert Board of the National Tuberculosis Program in Peru and has worked as an independent consultant on TB-related issues for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
